Let’s journey into their #cabinlife story.

The Channel

Martin Johnson – Off Grid Living

Uniquely, Martin uses both his name and a brand name in the channel description.

Real Name(s)

Martin Johnson (age 45)

Julie Johnson (age 43)

Sara, Brittney and Seth are their children.

The Cabin

They started living in a tent and quickly got started on building their lovely cabin.

Uniquely, built their cabin by themselves, with help from their children. Keep in mind that they didn’t have much experience but a ton of determination.

They only have 7 acres which proves that you don’t need a lot to get going.

During their journey, they have added:

➜ A root cellar

➜ A water tank

➜ An outside deck for summer

➜ An indoor fireplace

They also have a ton of insulation.

They live in Idaho, just like numerous other homesteaders in North America.

I don’t have their exact location at this time and even if I did, I certainly wouldn’t want to void their privacy.

They shifted from a life in the city to a life in the woods, starting with an empty 7 acres and a dream to live debt-free in their own cabin.

Instead of simply outsourcing the build, they involved their children who learned valuable lifelong skills along the way.

Net Worth

YouTube couples are often wealthier than we imagine, but this isn’t the case here.

As of 2024, Martin Johnson – Off Grid Living has a net worth of $970,000 USD. This includes the value of their land, cabin, cars and online business.

They’re certainly not rich and what they’ve attained (while raising kids along the way) is attainable for many of us with families too.

It’s also surprising how much their channel makes.

Martin Johnson – Off Grid Living makes $7,900 per month on YouTube.

To do this, they simply:

➜ Use affiliate links to preparedness products

➜ Allow YouTube to put ads on their videos

➜ Have some selected brand sponsorships

➜ Offer a thriving Patreon membership

So it’s clear that they’re treating their YouTube channel like a business. They deserve every dollar for the effort that they not only put into their homestead but the lessons that they’ve shared with many of us.

Big Moments

While they’re new to homesteading, they have experienced:

➜ Snow and ice causing their roof to cave in

➜ Having to dig out a ton of snow

➜ Nailing the wall to the floor (whoops!)

It’s their first time building something of this scale, so it’s natural that some mistakes would arise along the way.

This should not discourage you from having a go yourself.

Future Plans

7 acres seems to be just enough for them. I don’t see them needing additional land anytime soon unless they plan to start farming.

I haven’t found much controversy or gossip online. How could anyone hate this inspiring family?

What can we learn from their #cabinpreneur journey?

➜ Work on your self-sufficiency plans

➜ Don’t rely on others to rescue you
